The Art of Sarah begins with a death, but its real subject is identity. After a woman known as Sarah Kim is found dead, detective Park Mu-gyeong starts following the stories left behind by the people who knew her. The problem is that no two versions of Sarah agree. She has risen quickly through Seoul’s luxury world, but each clue suggests that the carefully built life surrounding her may be a construction rather than the truth.

That setup makes this Netflix Korean drama more than a straightforward murder mystery. It is interested in status, ambition and the way a convincing persona can become more powerful than a person’s actual history. The luxury-brand setting gives The Art of Sarah an elegant, cold visual language, and the investigation unfolds in a way that encourages you to keep questioning what you have just been told. It is stylish without being empty, which is not always easy for this kind of thriller.

Shin Hae-sun is the reason the drama works as well as it does. She gives Sarah an elusive quality while still making her feel like a human being rather than a puzzle box. Lee Jun-hyuk provides a calm counterweight as the detective, and their scenes carry the tension of two people who are never quite working from the same set of facts. The short episode count is also a strength: it keeps the plot focused and avoids the usual mid-series drag.
